Bed and Nightstand: The Correct Height for Ergonomic Coordination

Bed and Nightstand: The Correct Height for Ergonomic Coordination

Bed and Nightstand: Coordinating the Height

When furnishing nightstands in hotels or holiday apartments, one often faces a practical problem: the height does not match the bed. A nightstand that is too low forces guests to bend down, while one that is too high appears disproportionate and makes it difficult to place a glass or book. The correct coordination between bed and nightstand determines whether the room feels harmonious and whether the surface is actually used.

The Top Edge of the Mattress as Reference Point

As a rule of thumb: the surface of the nightstand should be approximately level with the top edge of the mattress, at most a hand's width above or below. This allows one to reach for the alarm clock comfortably while lying down, without lifting the upper body. Placing a glass or reading glasses also becomes effortless. When working with Beds with high headboards or upholstered frames, one must measure the actual mattress height, not the total height of the furniture.

Different Bed Heights in the Same Property

In hotels or apartment buildings, various bed models often stand side by side, some with low frames, others with box spring construction. Here it is advisable to keep nightstands in two or three height levels in stock. A model with adjustable feet or a series with different height variants facilitates adaptation. This maintains a uniform appearance while ensuring functionality for each bed.

Do Not Forget Width and Depth

Besides height, the base area also plays a role. A narrow nightstand suffices for a lamp and telephone, but appears lost next to a wide double bed. Conversely, a model that is too bulky can block the passage to the window. In narrow rooms, slim consoles or wall-mounted shelves are suitable, leaving the floor clear while still positioned at the correct height.

Visual Effect and Room Proportions

A nightstand that is significantly lower than the mattress makes the bed appear massive and oversized. A nightstand that is too high, however, visually pushes the bed downward and disrupts the horizontal line in the room. Both pieces of furniture should form a common line that the eye perceives as calm. This applies particularly in smaller rooms, where every inconsistency is more noticeable.

Practical Tips for Selection

Measure the top edge of the mattress including topper or overlay before purchasing. Also note the distance between the bed edge and wall to determine the maximum depth of the nightstand. Ensure that drawers can open fully without hitting the bed. A model with open compartments or a shelf below the top offers additional storage space without changing the height.
