Bed and Nightstand: The Right Height for Optimal Ergonomics

Bed and Nightstand: The Right Height for Optimal Ergonomics

Bed and Nightstand: Coordinating the Height

When setting up a new bed or renewing bedroom furniture, the height of the nightstand is often overlooked. The result: you have to stretch or bend down at night to reach your glasses, book or water glass. Proper coordination between bed and nightstand ensures comfort and avoids awkward movements while lying down. This shortcoming is immediately noticeable in hotels, guesthouses or holiday apartments and diminishes the impression.

The Top Edge of the Mattress is the Reference Point

What matters is not the height of the bed frame, but the surface of the mattress when loaded. When you are lying down, the storage surface of the nightstand should be approximately at the same height or just below. This allows you to comfortably reach everything you need at night without raising your arm or turning to the side. A difference of a few centimetres downwards is acceptable, anything beyond that becomes impractical.

High Beds Require High Nightstands

Modern box spring beds or classic Beds with high bases often position the sleeping surface considerably higher than ordinary models. Flat nightstands are no longer sufficient here. Choose chests of drawers, tall cabinets or side tables that reach at least the height of the mattress top. Stackable solutions or pedestals under an existing nightstand can also help if you do not want to purchase new furniture immediately.

Low Futon Beds and Flat Upholstered Beds

Futon beds, tatami frames or upholstered beds with low frame height sit close to the floor. Low side tables, flat stools or even trays on short legs are suitable here. It is important that the storage surface is not higher than the mattress, otherwise you will have to reach upwards while lying down. In Japanese-inspired interiors or minimalist bedrooms, this combination appears harmonious and restrained.

Adjustable Slatted Frames and Different Mattress Heights

Adjustable slatted frames raise the head or foot section, but the mattress height in the flat position remains decisive for choosing the nightstand. If you use thick mattresses or toppers, add this height to the frame height. It is best to measure directly on the assembled bed before selecting the nightstand. This avoids incorrect purchases and subsequent modifications.

Symmetry and Visual Appearance in the Room

Besides function, visual appearance plays a role. Nightstands that are significantly lower than the bed make the bed appear bulky. Nightstands that are too high dominate the room and disturb the proportions. Ensure that both sides of the bed are equipped identically if two people use the bed. Different heights on both sides appear restless and unprofessional, especially in guest rooms or hotel rooms.
