Coffee Table in Front of the Sofa: Choosing the Right Distance and Height
A coffee table rarely stands alone. Together with the sofa, it forms the centre of the living area and must remain functional. If you measure the distance too narrowly, you will bump your knees. If you plan it too generously, you will have to stretch when putting down your cup. The height also determines whether the table is truly usable or simply in the way.
The Right Distance Between Sofa and Coffee Table
Between the edge of the seat and the edge of the table, you should leave enough space to stand up and sit down comfortably. A distance of about half an arm's length has proven effective. This corresponds roughly to the distance you need to reach a glass or a remote control without contorting yourself. Too much space appears disconnected, too little restricts freedom of movement. Measure the available space before deciding on a table size.
The Appropriate Height Relative to the Seat Cushion
The top edge of the coffee table should be level with the seating surface or just below it. This allows objects to be set down and picked up effortlessly. Observing Proportions in the Room
A bulky table in front of a delicate two-seater visually overwhelms the seating group. Conversely, a narrow table disappears in front of a large sectional sofa. The length of the coffee table should be approximately two-thirds of the sofa width, so that the proportions remain balanced. With L-shaped seating groups, the table may also be square or round, provided it remains easily accessible from all sides.
Coordinating Form and Use
Rectangular tables fit into classic room layouts and offer ample surface area. Round or oval forms soften tight passageways and appear gentler. In narrow living rooms, a movable or extendable table can be sensible. Before making your decision, check whether doors and drawers of surrounding furniture can still swing freely when the table is in place.
