Solid Wood, Veneer, MDF: What the Price Really Means

When calculating furniture for your property, you face the question: solid wood, veneer or MDF? The price difference is considerable, yet not every solution suits every purpose. Those who understand the differences avoid poor purchases and can advise their customers with expertise. The choice of material determines not only the purchase price, but also durability, maintenance requirements and complaint rates.

Solid Wood: Weight, Movement and Maintenance Requirements

Solid wood consists of continuous pieces of wood without carrier material. It moves with climate fluctuations: joints can open, panels can warp. For hotels and catering establishments, this means regular reworking of connections. The weight complicates rearrangement operations. However, repairability is high: scratches can be sanded down, damage can be repaired. Expect three to four times the price compared to veneered alternatives.

Veneer: Real Wood Appearance with Controllable Behaviour

Veneer is a thin layer of wood on a carrier core of chipboard or MDF. The surface shows genuine grain, the core remains dimensionally stable. For Dining Tables in the contract sector, this is an advantage: no joint formation, lower weight, less warping. Repair options are limited: areas sanded through cannot be refinished. In terms of price, veneer is approximately 40 to 60 percent below solid wood with comparable appearance.

MDF: Uniform Surface for Painting and Decoration

MDF consists of fine wood fibres and binding agent, pressed into homogeneous panels. The surface is smooth, without grain, ideal for opaque paints or films. MDF swells considerably with moisture, therefore only suitable for dry interior spaces. Edge processing requires care: unsealed cut edges absorb water. For Consoles and decorative furniture, MDF is an economical choice when the painting is professionally executed.

Weight and Transport Costs in Comparison

A dining table made of solid oak quickly weighs 80 to 120 kilograms, the veneered version 40 to 60 kilograms, MDF lies in between. This influences freight costs and handling. For properties with frequent refurbishment or floors without lifts, weight is a planning factor. The load-bearing capacity of floors and fixings must also be considered.

Service Life and Replacement

Solid wood lasts for decades with proper care, can be refinished and resold. Veneer achieves 15 to 25 years, after which signs of use can usually no longer be remedied. MDF shows wear on edges and surfaces after 10 to 15 years. For the hotel industry with short renovation cycles, the shorter service life can be acceptable if the purchase price is correspondingly lower.

Which Material for Which Application

Solid wood is suitable for representative areas with low mechanical stress and controlled climate. Veneer is the first choice for heavily frequented dining rooms and hotel lobbies: robust, easy to maintain, dimensionally stable. MDF is an option when appearance and budget take priority and usage remains moderate. The decisive factor is honest calculation over the planned period of use.
