The motif
A head in white porcelain whose skull is divided into labelled fields: language, order, colour, time, music. The base carries, in a blue border, the line Phrenology by L. N. Fowler. Fowler issued these heads in London from 1860, today they are a classic of collectors' shelves.

Craftsmanship and painting
The head is worked in glazed white porcelain, the field lines and lettering printed in fine black, the edges of the base set off in blue. The piece is made of slip-cast porcelain which gains its hardness and gloss in the firing. Painting and gilding are applied by hand after the firing and fired a second time.

Placement and effect
The head sits well on a library shelf, on a desk or in a practice. It is a conversation piece and needs no company, a light background makes the fine lettering legible.

Material and care
Porcelain is colourfast and does not age, a soft dry cloth is all it takes. Hand-painted areas and gilding must not go into the dishwasher. Because every piece is painted by hand, no two are identical: slight variations in tone and brushwork are part of the process and are not a defect.
