A reading nook by the window offers natural light and a retreat, yet many establishments waste this potential. The space remains unused or is furnished with unsuitable furniture that is neither ergonomic nor atmospheric. The choice of the right seating furniture determines whether guests or residents actually use the corner or ignore it. The Right Position in Front of the Window
Do not place the seating furniture directly in front of the radiator, but offset to the side. This avoids draughts in winter and heat accumulation in summer. A low side table within reach holds cup, reading glasses and book. The height should be just below the armrest so that you can reach comfortably. A swivel floor lamp supplements the daylight on overcast days or in the evening hours. Position it so that the light falls over the shoulder onto the reading position. A footstool extends the seating position and enables a relaxed posture with angled legs. Ensure that all elements together do not take up more space than the window width.
Colour Design and Spatial Effect
Light covers enhance the light effect and make the corner appear friendly, whilst dark tones create cosiness and contrast with the bright window surface. In small rooms, light furniture appears less bulky, whilst in spacious rooms you may also choose bold colours. The colour choice should relate to the rest of the room: either as a harmonious complement or as a deliberate accent. Patterned covers can appear restless when there is already much movement from changing light. Plain surfaces bring calm to the reading nook.
Care and Protection from Sunlight
Even lightfast covers benefit from sun protection during the most intense midday hours. Blinds or semi-transparent curtains filter the light without completely darkening the room. Rotate seat cushions regularly so that they age evenly. Vacuum upholstered furniture by the window more frequently than others, as more dust settles there. For leather covers, regular conditioning prevents drying out from solar heat. Check the stability twice a year, as connections can loosen due to temperature fluctuations.
