Elevating Your Bed: Using Storage Space Underneath Without Visible Boxes
In smaller bedrooms or guest rooms, there is often insufficient space for a separate wardrobe. Raising the bed creates storage space underneath, but open boxes or containers quickly appear untidy. The challenge lies in utilising the space beneath the bed without the storage remaining visible or the room appearing visually cluttered.
Higher Bed Frames Create Hidden Storage Space
A bed frame with sufficient ground clearance provides space for flat drawers, mobile containers or closed boxes. The overall height is crucial: the bed should be constructed so that you can get in and out comfortably, whilst leaving enough room underneath for bedding, blankets or clothing. Models with a continuous base or surrounding frame conceal the contents completely. For Beds with visible feet, a matching bed skirt or valance is recommended to cover the gap whilst simultaneously bringing textile warmth into the room.
Closed Systems Instead of Open Boxes
Open plastic boxes can be quickly pushed under the bed, but remain visible from the side and collect dust. Closed storage in the form of flat wooden boxes, drawers on castors or upholstered chests appears tidier. Ensure that the elements can be pulled out easily without having to move the bed. Systems with handles or recesses facilitate access. Those who wish to keep the storage space completely invisible should choose a bed frame with an integrated storage compartment that opens via a lever mechanism.
Visual Enclosure Through Textile Covering
A surrounding fabric that reaches from the bed frame to the floor conceals everything underneath and can be lifted when required. Such valances are available in various designs: smooth, gathered or pleated. Attachment is either with Velcro tape to the slatted base or by clamping between the mattress and frame. It is important that the fabric is cut floor-length and leaves no gaps. In rooms with representative furnishings, such as with baroque mirrors, a heavy velvet or brocade can emphasise the overall effect whilst simultaneously fulfilling a practical purpose.
Organising Storage Space by Usage
Divide the space under the bed according to frequency of access. Seasonal bedding or guest pillows can be placed further back, whilst items needed daily remain within easy reach at the front. Flat vacuum bags considerably reduce the volume of blankets and pillows and create additional space. Label closed containers so that you do not have to search through all boxes each time. This maintains order permanently.
Do Not Forget Ventilation and Cleaning
Storage space directly on the floor tends to accumulate dust. Leave small gaps at the sides for air circulation so that moisture does not build up. Clean the area regularly by briefly pulling out the storage. A low vacuum cleaner attachment reaches even awkward spots. Closed systems protect the contents better than open solutions and facilitate the maintenance of the bedroom overall.
